Sometimes I must admit I don’t have a clue what to write about in this blog. I draw a complete blank and find myself grasping at straws. Yet, more often that not I manage to stumble on a topic related to something I’ve experienced fairly recently that has moved me. This week is regrettably no different, so please indulge me!
Last week I came across a video on Instagram (or YouTube, I forget which), by a well-known male influencer, who was talking about expressing himself with deeper purpose and feeling. Indeed what resonated most with me in the moment was how clearly, and succinctly he distilled the idea that he had into words. That is honestly something that I wrestle with perpetually as a writer. It’s hard to express exactly the way I feel. Yet somehow, he managed to bring home his point in a way that touched me; otherwise I wouldn’t be writing about him here.
What I realized he succeeded in doing effectively was three things: i) Organizing his thoughts clearly and in an uncomplicated, succint manner; ii) Putting his feelings into his words by allowing himself to be vulnerable; and iii) Phrasing his thesis in a way that triggered deeper reflection.
In other words, he didn’t just spell out the message explicitly nor force it down the readers throat. It wasn’t about spoon feeding or force feeding his viewpoint. He challenged listeners instead to immerse themselves in his thoughts and grapple with the idea. He wasn’t peddling dogma. It was more like a friendly invitation to explore a different perspective.
That is what I would like to achieve in my own writing one day. I’m trying to tap into this energy in my future work. Wish me luck! Thanks for stopping by.
